Headaches
At Pro Motion Physical Therapy, we help people find real relief from headaches. Several factors can cause headaches, and they are often quickly labeled as migraines. True migraines are neurological conditions that can be triggered by various influences like light, screen use, movement, diet, hydration, or hormonal changes.
However, many headaches are actually caused by problems in the neck, muscles, or nerves. These “orthopedic headaches” can feel very similar to migraines but are often treatable with the right care. Muscle tightness, joint stiffness, or nerve irritation can all refer pain into the head and create ongoing discomfort.
During your evaluation, your physical therapist will take the time to identify what’s truly causing your headaches and create a personalized treatment plan to address the source — so you can experience lasting relief, not just temporary symptom management.

Muscle-Induced
Headaches
Muscles function in a balanced way to help your joints move properly and stay stable. When a muscle is too tight, too weak, or overworked, it can become irritated and inflamed. Over time, parts of the muscle become “stuck” in a tight spot — what we call a trigger point. You’ve probably felt one before during a massage; it’s that sore, tense spot that seems to hold tension.
These trigger points can send pain to other areas of your body, including your head. For example, tight muscles in your neck and shoulders can create headaches around your eyes or temples.
At Pro Motion Physical Therapy, we utilize a combination of soft tissue massage, dry needling, stretching, and stability exercises to release these tight spots, relax the muscles, and relieve the headaches at their source. This approach helps reduce pain and prevent headaches from coming back.

Spinal Joint Mobility
Restrictions
Your neck is made up of seven small vertebrae, each with joints that help your head and neck move properly. Over time, poor posture — like constantly leaning your head forward — can flatten the natural curve of your neck and compress the muscles at the base of your skull. This can also put extra stress on certain joints in your mid-neck, which is why these areas are often involved in severe neck problems.
When your neck joints stay in a stressed or “stuck” position for a long time, they can become irritated and contribute to headaches. For example, tension in the joints at the base of your skull can create pain behind your eyes, while joints slightly lower can cause pain in your forehead or eyebrows.
At Pro Motion Physical Therapy, we help restore proper neck joint mobility using gentle joint manipulation, combined with dry needling, stretching, and targeted exercises. This helps relieve pressure, relax muscles, and gradually restore the natural curve of your spine, reducing headaches and improving overall neck comfort.

Neural Tension
Nerves can also be a source of pain and headaches. Think of a nerve like a water hose — if it gets pinched or compressed, the flow is blocked, which can cause pain or discomfort.
The key to effective physical therapy is identifying which nerve is irritated and where it’s being pinched. For example:
- The Greater Occipital Nerve starts at the base of your skull and runs up the back of your head. Tight or inflamed muscles at the base of your skull can pinch this nerve, leading to headaches at the back or top of your head.
- The Dorsal Scapular Nerve travels along your shoulder blade. Tight muscles in the neck and shoulder, such as the medial scalene, can compress this nerve, causing pain that radiates along your shoulder blade.
At Pro Motion Physical Therapy, we identify the specific nerves involved and use a combination of targeted exercises, stretching, and soft tissue techniques to release tension, reduce irritation, and relieve pain — helping you feel better and move more comfortably.
